Historical Background of Mani
This distinctive tower was constructed in the early 1800s at the edge of the peninsula. Its strategic location made it ideal for defense against invaders. Historical records indicate that only a handful of families ever resided in the tower. Unlike the rest of Greece, the islanders never fell under Ottoman rule, and they played a key role in Greece's independence in 1832. Following the war, many homes and towers were left deserted as residents migrated to Athens.
