Symptoms of Alzheimer’s
Alzheimer’s typically begins gradually and worsens over time. Here are four early indicators:
- Memory loss: Difficulty retaining new information, such as recent events or conversations. Problems with reading, speaking, writing, and math may also appear.
- Declining cognitive function: Impaired thinking, judgment, and understanding. Loss of initiative and independence, along with disorientation to time or place.
- Loss of touch with reality: Suspicion, paranoia, and delusions (false beliefs) are common. Half of patients experience delusions, like thinking they are being stolen from or lied to. Hallucinations may also occur.
- Struggles with daily tasks: Familiar activities become difficult and clumsy. However, social skills may remain intact for a while, masking the problem from outsiders.
