Practical Recommendations
While some factors, like air pollution, are beyond our control, several strategies can help alleviate dry eyes. De Vries shares these tips:
- Rest your eyes regularly, especially during computer work. Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look away from your screen at an object 20 feet (about 6 meters) away for 20 seconds. Use this time to blink more frequently, allowing your tear film to recover.
- Increase humidity in dry or dusty environments. Avoid air conditioning and heaters, as they reduce moisture in the air and dehydrate your eyes.
- Blink properly and often. On average, we blink every four seconds (about 15 times per minute). Ensure your upper eyelid meets your lower eyelid fully when blinking.
- Wear sunglasses. Bright light can strain your eyes and contribute to dryness.
- Use eye drops when the cause of dryness cannot be eliminated. Over-the-counter homeopathic options are available. If symptoms persist, consult an eye doctor.
