How to Help Someone Having an Epileptic Seizure

Steps to Take When Someone Is Having an Epileptic Seizure:

  • If the person is still seizing or unconscious, call emergency services or ask someone nearby to do so. Put the phone on speaker mode.
  • Try to position the person so they cannot injure themselves.
  • Do not place anything in the person's mouth. During the initial phase of the seizure, jaw muscles may suddenly tighten, causing the person to bite their tongue. This is called a tongue bite and cannot be prevented even if you insert something into their mouth.
  • If the person recovers before the ambulance arrives, call emergency services again for further instructions.
  • If the person has indicated they frequently have seizures, let the seizure run its course before calling for emergency support.
