This is what makes the method so satisfying. Instead of rubbing tarnish off by hand, the aluminum foil bath triggers a chemical reaction that shifts the tarnish away from the silver. Tarnish on silver is usually silver sulfide, and in this setup, the aluminum becomes the more reactive metal in the solution, drawing the sulfur away.
