Hearing Loss, Medications, and Hidden Health Issues Can Mimic Memory Loss
By the mid-50s or 60s, another pattern emerges: the problem isn't always memory itself. Sometimes, the brain doesn't receive clear information initially. Hearing loss becomes more prevalent with age and is linked to cognitive decline. This doesn't prove that hearing loss directly causes forgetfulness, but it explains why following conversations becomes harder. When someone misses parts of what was said, the brain has less information to store. Later, it may seem like they forgot, when in fact they never fully heard or processed the information. The extra mental effort required to listen can also be exhausting over time.
