According to Dr. Mitchel Hoffman, a gynecologic oncologist at the Moffitt Cancer Center, persistent pain in the abdomen or pelvis often indicates that the cancer has spread. “When we operate on patients with ovarian cancer, the majority have metastases,” he explains. Tumors can appear in the upper abdomen, large intestine, or even the diaphragm. Ovarian cancer can also cause fluid buildup, all of which contribute to pain.
