Knowing what fresh fish smells like helps you spot the difference when it turns bad. Chef Kiki Aranita of Poi Dog explains that spoiled raw fish gives off a strong, putrid odor. They told EatingWell: "If it smells pungently fishy and foul (and makes you lose your appetite!), trust your nose.

Its texture can become slimy, soft, and mushy, and the color may turn gray. A shiny surface is normal, but slime is a warning sign." Look for sour smells, cloudy eyes, bruising, and slime.
