7 strategies to warm your home without overspending on energy costs

3. Use timers

When you wake up cold, you might crank up the heating to warm your home quickly. However, using a timer is much more cost-effective. The Centre for Sustainable Energy recommends setting your boiler timer to start about half an hour before you wake up, but crucially, set it to a lower temperature. This approach is cheaper than turning on the heat when you feel cold. A boiler heats at a constant rate, regardless of whether you set it to 20 °C or 30 °C. Also, avoid leaving the heating on all day when you're away, as that wastes energy on an empty house.
