3. Use timers
When you wake up cold, you might crank up the heating to warm your home quickly. However, using a timer is much more cost-effective. The Centre for Sustainable Energy recommends setting your boiler timer to start about half an hour before you wake up, but crucially, set it to a lower temperature. This approach is cheaper than turning on the heat when you feel cold. A boiler heats at a constant rate, regardless of whether you set it to 20 °C or 30 °C. Also, avoid leaving the heating on all day when you're away, as that wastes energy on an empty house.
